From an 'A-List' Meet-Cute to an Accessible Dream Wedding: Heather & Jamie’s Big Day at Bachilton Barn
How did you meet? If you ask Heather and Jamie Smith, they’ll tell you it involved an air hostess, a rock legend, and a mutual friend’s birthday party.
"Heather came as an air hostess and Jamie was dressed as AC/DC," they laugh, looking back at the "Letter A" themed fancy-dress party where their story first began. Years later, their wedding day was just as full of personality, fun, and deeply thoughtful details.
When it came time to plan their big day, Heather and Jamie had a clear vision. They wanted a celebration that matched their vibrant energy, but more than anything, they wanted it to be inclusive. Comfort and accessibility were at the very heart of their planning.
Here, the newlyweds share the inside scoop on how they created their dream day at Bachilton Barn, how they conquered the pre-wedding jitters, and the brilliant tricks they discovered along the way.
Finding the Perfect Space: Accessibility Meets Beauty
The search for the perfect venue can be daunting, but for Heather and Jamie, Bachilton Barn stole their hearts almost instantly. They needed a stunning backdrop for their photos, on-site accommodation for their grandparents, and, crucially, a venue that welcomed every single guest with open arms, no matter their mobility.
"Aside from Bachilton Barn being the most gorgeous space inside and out, we loved how accessible it was for our older friends and family in wheelchairs, on crutches, or with buggies," Heather explains.
But it wasn’t just the idyllic Perthshire scenery or the practical layout that won them over, it was the people.
"What really tipped the scale was how accommodating the team is. They truly let us personalise our day, which meant the world to us."
The flat grounds allowed all of their guests to navigate the day with ease, ensuring that from the ceremony to the dance floor, no one missed a single moment of the magic.
Thoughtful Details and Green Touches
With the perfect venue locked in, Heather and Jamie poured their hearts into the finer details. Sustainability was a natural part of their planning, and they loved how seamlessly it fit into the Bachilton ethos.
Heather went the extra mile to align with the venue's eco-friendly vibe, actively seeking out a confetti supplier who could provide a certificate for 100% biodegradable petals. Even the smaller operational details didn't go unnoticed.
"I thought the tour of the light switches was great to save on electricity," Heather notes, appreciating the practical ways the venue helps couples keep their environmental footprint small without compromising on the celebration.
Overcoming Nerves and Dancing the Night Away
Like many brides, Heather admits to feeling a massive wave of pre-wedding anxiety about being the centre of attention. The thought of all eyes on them was daunting, but looking back, the moments she dreaded most became her absolute favourites.
"I absolutely loved our ceremony," she beams. "Walking in as Mr and Mrs Smith with all our friends and family cheering, our first dance, and, of course, Loch Lomond at the end of the night! Before the big day, I was anxious about having all eyes on us, but there was no better feeling than seeing all your loved ones so incredibly happy for you."
The room was filled with pure joy, turning what could have been a nerve-wracking moment into an unforgettable high.
The Ultimate Secret to an Uninterrupted Reception
For couples currently in the wedding planning trenches, Heather and Jamie have one brilliant, game-changing piece of advice to ensure you actually get to enjoy your evening party: The Evening Greeting.
"Our biggest tip would be to stand at the door and greet and thank your evening guests as they arrive," Heather says. "We’re so glad we did this because everyone got a chance to chat with us, and we got to introduce each other to people we hadn’t met before, like distant cousins. It meant we got that precious time with them right away, and then we could dance the night away without any interruptions!"
Now happily settled into married life, the couple is enjoying a slightly slower pace, looking back at their gorgeous photos and videos, and looking forward to a lifetime of adventures together.
